Chief Financial Officer Andrew Cantu provides financial and strategic leadership for Kern Medical and manages all financial aspects of the 222-bed facility with a net operating revenue of $327 million. He manages the full spectrum of the revenue cycle, including finance, admissions, emergency room registration, outpatient clinics, financial counseling and information systems.
Cantu’s areas of expertise include revenue cycle and organizational leadership, budgeting and cost management, new business development, contract negotiations, corporate and investment finance, growth and expansion strategies, profitability and cost analysis, case management and utilization review, and team building and performance improvement. He is a principal in Cantu Management Group Inc. of Bakersfield and came to Kern Medical from Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield, where he was Chief Financial Officer. Among his accomplishments there was collaborating with business development officials to add a much-needed neuro clinic.
In his previous role as controller at Mercy, Cantu worked with leadership and the administrative team to open Southwest Hospital’s new 8-bed ICU and 14-bay Emergency Department. He was instrumental in a significant rise in coding accuracy in a reorganization of the Health Information Management Department.
He also served as Kern Service Area Regional Finance Director for Catholic Healthcare West and in previous positions as a consultant and accountant.
Cantu holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, with a concentration in finance and business economics. He has a master’s degree in healthcare administration from California State University-Bakersfield. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
He enjoys spending time with family and friends and golfing.
