Although housing is not provided by Kern Medical, ample housing is available in Bakersfield. A definite perk when considering Bakersfield is that the rental market is reasonable. A one- or two-bedroom apartment usually rents for $500 – $1000 per month. A lot of complexes also accept month-to-month contracts, alleviating the need for a lease.
Although apartment and rooms for rent lists are available, neither are endorsed by the Program. They are provided for your convenience and should be individually vetted.
In Bakersfield, housing is probably not close enough to the hospital to walk, so it’s advisable to have a car. Also, some rotations are located away from campus, making a car a necessity.
Meal Stipend of $164.71 per bi-weekly pay period included in payroll check and a 20% cafe discount. On-duty meals provided while rotating on campus at Kern Medical during the cafe non-operating hours.
