Our highly ranked core psychiatry rotations are offered to medical students through Kern Medical’s Medical Education Department (Med ED). Medical students must be affiliated with an accredited medical institution.
Medical students rotate for six weeks to complete their core psychiatry rotation. During that time, students under the supervision of residents and attendings receive first hand experience in the care of the acutely mentally ill on the inpatient unit. Medical students rotate through the consultation and liaison service, evaluating, discussing, and learning from medical and surgical inpatients as well as emergency department consults. Finally, medical students observe psychiatric evaluations and treatment in our child and adult outpatient facilities.
Students conduct supervised interviews with patients, present cases to the team, attend core lectures, follow lab trends, assemble and distribute daily logs, pass the in-house exam, and deliver one presentation. Time is allotted at the end of the rotation to complete the shelf exam.
Sub-internships for senior medical students are offered in the inpatient unit, child clinics, and the consultation and liaison service.
