health care professionals in our community.

Welcome to the General Psychiatry Training Program

The Department of Psychiatry at Kern Medical in Bakersfield, California, is a major provider of psychiatric care in Kern County. The Department of Psychiatry provides direct psychiatric services at Kern Medical and Kern Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. Residents experience includes rotation at the Kern Medical Behavioral Health Unit (BHU at 3B), Consultation and Liaison service at Kern Medical and outpatient treatment at the KernBHRS Resident Outpatient Clinic (ROC),East Bakersfield Outpatient Children’s Clinic, Bakersfield VA Outpatient Clinic, and Lerdo Detention Facility. Through our special relationship with UCLA, trainees may rotate at UCLA affiliated sites including the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, and Olive View UCLA Medical Center.

The Department offers accredited training for general psychiatry. The Psychiatry Residency Program is a four-year program accredited in 2002 with its first graduating class in 2004. Upon completion, graduates are eligible for board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Graduates of these programs receive two certificates of completion, from Kern Medical and from UCLA.

Our top ranked core psychiatry rotations are offered to medical students through the Kern Medical Education Department. Sub-internships for senior medical students are also offered in the inpatient unit and consultation and liaison service.

The training programs offer a thorough supervised experience in psychiatric pathologies by exposing them to diverse patients in varied settings. Trainees work alongside motivated peers and experienced colleagues, all under the guidance and instruction of dedicated and experienced faculty.
