About Dr. Chen
Dr. Yufan “Brandon” Chen joined Kern Medical in 2020 as its first full-time specialist in urogynecology. Dr. Chen earned his Bachelors of Science at the University of California Berkeley in bioengineering, then graduated from medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He then completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kaiser San Francisco, before completing fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Chen is strongly invested in women’s health and is committed to improving the lives of his patients and advancing the field of gynecology.
Dr. Chen is passionate about academics and education. In addition to training residents at Kern Medical’s OBGYN residency program, he is also an assistant clinical professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is the Director of Surgical Simulation at Kern Medical and has invented several clinical and surgical models that are used to educate medical learners and patients. Furthermore, he has published numerous articles in scientific journals, presented at national conferences, and is a reviewer for the International Urogynecology Journal.
Dr. Chen lives in Bakersfield with his wife, 3 kids, and 2 dogs. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, playing the piano, and participating in outdoor activities.

Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery

Dr. Chen’s areas of expertise:
Dr. Chen specializes in conditions commonly known as “pelvic floor disorders”. These include Stress Urinary Incontinence, (leakage with coughing, laughing, sneezing, lifting, etc.), Urge Urinary Incontinence (leakage with a sense of urgency, inability to get to the bathroom on time), and Pelvic Organ Prolapse (feeling a bulge in the vaginal area). He also manages recurrent urinary tract infections, chronic pelvic pain, vulvar disorders, and genitourinary fistulas.
Dr. Chen offers surgical and non-surgical treatment options for pelvic floor disorders. After an initial assessment, he will spend time thoroughly reviewing treatment options to make sure his patients are fully informed and satisfied before proceeding. Most of the surgeries Dr. Chen performs are minimally invasive, which include robotic surgery with the Da Vinci Xi robot, resulting in fewer complications and faster recovery times.
Patients can often feel embarrassed or uncomfortable talking about their pelvic issues, but Dr. Chen and his team are dedicated to making everyone feel safe and comfortable by being attentive to a patient’s needs and creating a welcoming environment.
